The climatology was derived from shortwave measurements for the period June 1974 to February 1978 taken by the TIROS-N satellite(s). Analyses of this data for the tropical Pacific and Atlantic are provided in Mitchell and Wallace (1992, J. Climate, 5, 1140-1156).
