Piura Perú (5S) rainfall and river discharge


Piura is in the northern coastal desert of Peru. It is a place that is strongly affected by El Niño. The Piura data is provided by Norma Ordinola and Rodolfo Rodriguez of the Universidad de Piura, Perú.

    Piura Airport December through June rainfall totals (cm) for 1932-97

    The totals are ascribed to the year of the January, for example, the December 1933 through June 1934 total is plotted as the 1934 value. There is no data for 1950-56.

    Piura River Discharge (m3/s) and Puerto Chicama SST anomalies (C) for 1980-98

    Puerto Chicama is located at 8 degrees S on the Peru coast. February through May average Piura river discharge is correlated with Pto. Chicama and offshore ("Nino 1+2") SST anomalies at 0.74 and 0.58, respectively, and with Tahiti SLP anomalies at -0.39 (1931-83, Deser and Wallace (1987, JGR).
