CHAPTER 6 XY Background

Instantiating a xy object

Instantiating a xy object

A xy background object can be used in place of a map background. An xy background allows you to specify any boundaries you desire for the background, and also gives you tighter control over tick marks and axis labels.

Press SELECT over to create a xy object. A new button will appear in the instance panel labeled "xy-n", where n is the serial number of the object.

If you press SELECT over the newly created instance button, a popup window will appear that allows you to control the appearance of the background

(see Fig. 18).

You can control the appearance of both the X and Y axes. The Range fields are used to set the low and high values of an axis. If you don't fill in these values yourself, Freud will automatically set these fields to the maximum and minimum dimensions of the first data variable of the first overlay object after you press the Plot button. The low value can be greater than the high value if desired.

The Ticks fields are used to specify the range on an axis where tick marks will be placed, and the spacing between major tick marks. There are two sizes of tick marks. Major tick marks are larger that minor tick marks, and value labels can be placed next to major tick marks. If you don't fill in any of these fields, Freud will fill them in for you when you press the Plot button. However, if even one contains a value, then you have to specify all of the other values. And, if you change the range of the axis, the tick mark values will not be automatically filled in unless you delete the values from all three fields, or clear out the fields by pressing the Reset Ticks button.

You can also adjust the following items:
